UFC trying out women’s flyweight division with Valerie Letourneau vs. Joanne Calderwood at UFC Fight Night 89

The UFC is looking into the potential for a women’s flyweight division, and the first 125 lb. women’s bout will happen on June 18 in Ottawa, Ontario.

According to a report from Damon Martin at FoxSports.com, Valerie Letourneau will meet Joanne Calderwood in that flyweight bout at UFC Fight Night 89, though it’s not to be taken as an official establishment of the division in the UFC.

Letourneau last fought Strawweight Champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk in November, losing that fight by decision to snap a four fight winning streak. Calderwood picked up a win in her last fight in July of last year, defeating Cortney Casey in a fun fight in her home country of Scotland.

UFC Fight Night 89 will be headlined by the welterweight bout between Rory MacDonald and Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson, airing live on Fox Sports 1.

Penick’s Analysis: It’s an interesting step considering they haven’t been adding to the bantamweight division as it is, and a number of the fighters at 135 lbs. would likely consider dropping down were a 125 lb. division introduced. Perhaps they’re preparing for a future without Ronda Rousey, or they’re thinking of bringing in an influx of new women’s fighters.
