UFC Fight Night 89 in Ottawa to be headlined by Rory MacDonald vs. Stephen Thompson [UPDATED]

By Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

The UFC will make their first ever trip to Ottawa this June, as the Ottawa Citizen reports that a UFC Fight Night event is coming to the city on June 18.

The event was officially announced during Friday’s “Unstoppable” press conference in Las Vegas, with the previously reported Rory MacDonald vs Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson bout set to headline. Ottawa serves as the ninth city in Canada to play host to a UFC event.

“I’m excited to tell you that we’re going to be coming to the beautiful nation’s capital, one of my favourite cities in the country,” said Tom Wright, the executive vice-president of UFC Canada, Australia and New Zealand in the report.

“We’ve always wanted to come to our nation’s capital and we know that Ontario is a strong market for us. [Ottawa] is a nice distance between Montreal and Toronto and Kingston, it’s a great sports town, and we can’t think of a better city to mark the 20th UFC event in Canada than our nation’s capital.”

Penick’s Analysis: It’s a fitting five-round fight, and brings a highly relevant fight to Ottawa fans with one of Canada’s best fighters.
