If Conor McGregor wants to fight Robbie Lawler for the UFC Welterweight Title at UFC 200, the UFC seems prepared to entertain the idea.

UFC President Dana White was asked about the potential for that fight being made during the UFC 196 pre-fight press conference on Thursday, and he said with the way things have gone with McGregor to date, they’re willing to work with any of his viable ideas.

“I’m open to whatever he’s considering doing,” White said (via MMAJunkie.com). “If he wants to fight at 170 [lbs] and he wants to fight Robbie Lawler, Conor is tough to deny these days. Nobody’s ever done this – 145 pound [champion] going to 170 [lbs] – and it’s one of those things when you talk about these guys, and the money’s in the bank and all the things are going on, they have all this opportunity. Conor really does step up and fight anybody, anywhere, anytime. It’s impressive, it’s fun, and this is what makes you love the fight business.”

Penick’s Analysis: Well, the UFC’s on board. Now it’s up to McGregor to beat Nate Diaz, and if Georges St-Pierre is planning a comeback for him to be open to a non-title fight. McGregor-Lawler at UFC 200 is the type of crazy fight that could be worthy of that headlining spot. Though really any fight featuring McGregor is likely appropriate there, there’s something extremely enticing about the idea of a McGregor-Lawler fight for that Welterweight Championship.

  1. I get it that he’s the biggest name in mma right now , but how is the ufc ok with basically holding up 3 divisions for this guy. I applaud him for what he has accomplished and for doing what he says he’s going to do but there’s 3-4 top contenders in each of those classes that want their shot. If they keep this up in wouldn’t be surprised to see a lot of top talent go to bellator
