Ben Rothwell says UFC Heavyweight Title secondary: “My No. 1 priority is laying waste to this entire division”

By Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

“The bottom line is I think the belt is secondary, because my No. 1 priority is laying waste to this entire division. Tonight, it wasn’t about dancing or laughing. It was about making a statement, and I made it tonight… They don’t make decisions tonight. I’ll look at what the situation is. If they want to move things around and they’re ready put me in, I’ll crush [Fabricio] Werdum and take his belt.”

Penick’s Analysis: Rothwell submitting Josh Barnett is craziness. That finish Saturday night is one of the most unexpected ways for that fight to have ended, and Rothwell made as strong a case for a title fight as any other fighter has to date. He’s not necessarily going to get it, but submitting Josh Barnett is huge for him, and at worst he should be a No. 1 contender fight away from that opportunity.
